After a few technical issues, I have managed to get the battery life of the Eee PC 701 up to a level that is a little more respectable than it was, including the standby battery leakage. I ended up having to go into the BIOS and changing the setting of the OS Installation option from ‘Start’ to ‘Finish’. This also had the effet of upgrading the USB ports from 1.1 to 2.0 and got rid of the nag telling me that the ports could run faster if I upgraded them. It also installed the webcam properly so I could uninstall the 3rd party driver that I had installed for it. Skype now seems to play nicely, which is very cool.
I don’t think I’m actually going to be able to give this away. Unless the Atom processor based webbooks such as the Aspire One, Eee Pc 901 or the new Dell-E series falll in price quite considerably in November. I haven’t even started to play with things like an Ubuntu Linux distro yet. I amaa complete beginner when it comes to Linux, so I’ll wait until I get a 4GB SDHC Card to plug in and play to give me lots of capacity to boot a separate OS.
Speaking of geekness, I was at the Geek, Gadgets and Games event in Wellington tonight – a jolly friendly time was had by all. Was slightly stalked and followed by the organisers, but I’m glad twitter did its thing.
