The work ramps up – I want my weekend back

I’m having a cup of tea and composing my thoughts. It’s the first Monday morning back at work after an election has been called. There is a definite renewed sense of urgency to much of the work that I am involved with at the Ministry of Health and there is a lot to be done before Parliament is dissolved at the start of October.

The weekend seems like quite a while ago already. Kate’s parents have a bach (kiwi for holiday home, well, in the North Island anyway – Southerners call it a crib) up on the Kapiti Coast about an hour’s drive north of here. The weather yesterday was fantastic after a slightly dodgy start of the weekend on Friday night. Yet, lying in front of the fire listening to the rain falling against the window pane and the surf crashing in against the sandy shallow beach is very relaxing – just as much as sitting outside and reading the papers all weekend. We didn’t manage to make it outside to read, as it wasn’t quite that warm, but the weekend was full of coffee, anzac cookies, newspapers and books and The Ting-Tings, The Wombats, and The Millen Baird Show. All some of my favourite things at the moment, especially Millen Baird. I’d never heard of him before, but his new show on TV3 on a Friday night is just brilliant.

I’ve also been busy setting up meet-ups for when I’m back in the UK at the start of November. I know what you London people are like – need to book months ahead to get into those social diaries.
